Men's buttonless polo shirts in Cotton Silk knit

The buttonless polo is the quiet upgrade to the classic. Remove the button placket and you are left with a clean, unbroken neckline: the easy collar and shape of a polo, with a sharper, more modern line. Our PO 05 Tailored Buttonless is knitted from Cotton Silk knit, breathable cotton with the soft hand and subtle sheen of silk, so it dresses up a trouser on its own and stays comfortable through a long day. Designed in our Amsterdam studio and made in family-owned ateliers in Portugal, Turkey or China, chosen per piece for the best make.

What makes a buttonless polo different

A classic polo has a short button placket at the throat. The buttonless version takes it away, leaving an open, collared neckline with nothing to fasten. Three things follow from that:

  • A cleaner line. With no placket, buttons or contrast stitching, the eye runs straight from collar to chest. It reads more considered, less sporty.
  • An easier wear. Nothing to button means nothing to get wrong. Worn open at the neck, it is smart-casual by default.
  • A modern shape. The open collar sits flat and frames the neck, which is why the buttonless polo has become the quiet alternative to both the shirt and the crew tee.

If you want the traditional look, the classic buttoned PO 04 keeps the placket; for cooler days, the long-sleeve polo carries the same knit into autumn.

Cotton Silk knit, the fabric that does the work

The fabric is the reason this polo dresses up without trying. Cotton Silk knit pairs the breathability and easy care of cotton with the soft, dry hand and faint sheen of silk. It is knitted, not woven, so it moves with you and holds a clean drape rather than clinging. Against the skin it stays dry and cool, which is what keeps a knit polo comfortable from a warm afternoon into an evening. The subtle lustre is what lifts it above an ordinary jersey polo: present in good light, never shiny. It is the same Cotton Silk knit we use across our Tailored polos and crew tees, chosen because it photographs quiet and wears refined.

The PO 05 Tailored Buttonless

One silhouette, refined and offered in a full range of tonal shades, the muted, wearable colours ETQ is built on. A flat, structured collar that holds its shape, clean shoulder seams and a straight hem you can wear in or out. It is cut to sit close without pulling: a regular fit that works on its own or as a mid-layer under an overshirt.

How to wear a buttonless polo

  • Office and dinner: with an Essence trouser and a suede loafer. The clean neckline carries the outfit, so you need nothing more than good shoes.
  • Smart weekend: with chinos or denim and a clean white sneaker.
  • Warm weather: with tailored shorts and a suede loafer or a clean sneaker, worn on its own.
  • Layered: under an overshirt or unstructured jacket, where the open collar sits cleaner than a buttoned one.

Keep the palette tonal and let the polo do the talking. For built-out combinations, see our business casual edit.

Buttonless, classic or long-sleeve?

  • Buttonless (PO 05): the cleanest, most modern neckline, no placket. Choose it if you mostly wear your polo open.
  • Classic (PO 04): the traditional buttoned placket, for a slightly more formal, familiar look.
  • Long-sleeve: the same Cotton Silk knit with long sleeves, for cooler months and layering.

All three share the same fabric and fit, so once you know your size, you can move between them.

Fit and sizing

The PO 05 is a clean, regular fit, cut close to the body without restricting movement. Most customers find it true to size, in line with the rest of our knitwear. If you are between sizes or prefer a relaxed drape, size up. Each product page carries a size guide and verified-buyer fit feedback to take the guesswork out.

Caring for Cotton Silk knit

Cotton Silk is low-effort to live with. Machine wash cool, around 30 degrees, inside out and with like colours, then reshape and dry flat to protect the finish. Skip the tumble dryer, keep the iron low, and wash a little less often: knits stay fresher worn and aired than over-washed. Exact care is on each product page.

Why it earns a place in the rotation

When we ask customers what made them buy, the answer is consistent: quality, design and the restraint that keeps a piece wearable for years. The buttonless polo is built for exactly that, one clean top that moves from desk to dinner without a change of clothes. It is the kind of piece our returning customers come back for, and a large share of every month's orders comes from people buying their second, third or seventh ETQ piece. We have shipped to more than 200,000 customers across Europe and North America, with a 4.4 out of 5 average across thousands of independently verified reviews. Same but better, every iteration. That is our code.

Frequently asked about buttonless polos

What is a buttonless polo shirt?
A polo with the button placket removed, leaving a clean, unbroken collared neckline. You keep the collar and easy shape of a polo, with a sharper, more modern line.

What is the PO 05 made of?
Cotton Silk knit: breathable cotton with the soft hand and subtle sheen of silk. It is knitted for a clean drape, and stays dry and cool against the skin.

Is a buttonless polo more or less formal than a classic polo?
Slightly sharper and more modern. Worn open at the neck it reads smart-casual: cleaner than a buttoned polo and more relaxed than a shirt.

Does the PO 05 run true to size?
Yes, for most customers, in line with our knitwear. It is a clean, regular fit; if you prefer a looser drape, size up. Each product page carries fit feedback from verified buyers.

How do I care for it?
Machine wash cool at around 30 degrees, inside out, reshape and dry flat, and avoid the tumble dryer to keep the finish. Wash a little less often to keep it fresh.

Does the Cotton Silk polo shrink or pill?
Washed as directed — cool at around 30°C, inside out, and dried flat rather than tumbled — it holds its shape, and the structured collar and seams keep their line. The tumble dryer is the main cause of shrinkage, so skip it; turning the polo inside out in the wash also limits any pilling.

What is the difference between the PO 05 and the PO 04?
The PO 04 is the classic polo with a buttoned placket; the PO 05 Buttonless removes the placket for a clean, open collar. Same Cotton Silk knit, same fit.

Where is it made?
Designed in our Amsterdam studio and made in family-owned ateliers in Portugal, Turkey or China, chosen per piece for the best make.
