Merino Wool Turtleneck

Designed in the Netherlands, the winter layer that only works if the fibre is right.

A roll neck only works if the fibre is right: anything coarse and you feel it at the throat all day. The ETQ SW 06 solves that with 100% extrafine merino, fine enough to sit against the neck comfortably from morning to evening. Folded or worn high, the collar keeps its structure thanks to merino's natural elasticity. Designed in our Dutch studio and knitted in China at a mill chosen for its specialism in fine-gauge merino, from wool raised in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Across more than 500 verified reviews ETQ holds 4.6 out of 5, and comfort is the word that recurs most after quality. Part of a community of more than 250,000 customers.

The quietly confident layer

It's the most understated piece in the collection. Under a blazer or overshirt it reads understated and refined; on its own it's all you need. Merino's temperature regulation means it's warm without bulk, and its odour resistance means it stays fresh between wears.

How to wear it

Under a blazer or overshirt with tailored trousers it's a polished alternative to a shirt; on its own with denim it's an easy winter layer. Available in a range of tonal shades.

Why merino

The whole point of extrafine merino is the neck: the fibre is fine enough to bend against the skin rather than prick it, so the collar stays comfortable all day where a coarse roll neck wouldn't. It's warm for its weight, holds its shape, and is machine washable where most pure merino isn't.

How to choose

The roll neck is for the coldest months and for wearing under tailoring. For everyday, the crewneck; for adjustable warmth, the half-zip; for an open layer, the cardigan. All share the same fit.

Frequently asked about the merino roll neck

Is a merino roll neck itchy on the neck?

No. That's the whole point of using extrafine merino: the fibre is fine enough to bend against the skin rather than prick it, so the collar stays comfortable all day.

Turtleneck or roll neck: what's the difference?

None. 'Turtleneck' is the US term, 'roll neck' the UK term, 'coltrui' in Dutch. The same garment: a high folded collar.

Can I wear it under a suit?

Yes. A fine-gauge merino roll neck is a classic, polished alternative to a shirt under tailoring.

Is it machine washable?

Yes. A gentle wool cycle at 30°C, inside out, reshape while damp and dry flat. Never tumble dry or dry clean.

How does it fit?

A clean, regular fit. Most customers find it true to size; size accordingly for a closer or looser line.

Where is it made?

Designed in our Dutch studio and knitted in China at a mill chosen for its specialism in fine-gauge merino, from wool raised in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

How do shipping, returns and exchanges work?

Free shipping over 150 euro across Europe, the UK, the US and beyond. Returns and exchanges run through a self-service portal within 14 days; an exchange is the quickest fix if the size isn't right.
