How to keep white leather sneakers white (and what creases mean)

Give new white leather sneakers a light coat of leather care, wipe them with a damp cloth after wearing, clean them with a damp brush and sneaker cleaner when they need it, and condition them every four to six months. Never dry them on a heater. Creases where the foot bends are part of how leather wears in.

White full-grain leather sneakers worn with navy trousers on a stone path

Sunday evening. The week's walks are on your sneakers: a grey line along the sole, a mark from someone's chair, the dust of a city. Ten minutes at the kitchen table and they are ready again. That is what white leather asks of you. Not perfection, just a little attention, now and then.

Here is the routine we use for our white leather sneakers, from the day they arrive to the day you replace the laces, and why a crease is nothing to worry about.

How do you keep white leather sneakers white?

Protect them on day one, wipe them often, clean them when they need it and feed the leather a few times a year. Most of the work is small and quick.

When What to do
When a new pair arrives A light coat of leather care; test on a small area first
After wearing Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth; dry at room temperature
When they need it A damp brush with sneaker cleaner, small circles, a microfibre cloth
Every four to six months A generous layer of leather care, then let it dry fully
After heavy wear Fresh memory foam insoles and new laces

None of this takes long. Most of it is habit: a wipe when you take them off, a brush at the end of the week, a coat of leather care a few times a year.

What should you do when a new pair arrives?

Give it a light coat of leather care before you wear it out. Test on a small area first. It is the easiest moment to start, and it makes every clean after it easier. Our Deluxe Cleaning Kit brings together what we use ourselves: a cleaner, a protector, an odour spray, a brush and wipes, all safe on leather and suede.

How do you clean white leather sneakers?

With water, a little cleaner and patience. Take the laces out first, then:

  1. Dampen the brush with water and sneaker cleaner.
  2. Scrub gently, in small circles, over the upper.
  3. Wipe off the rest with a microfibre cloth.
  4. Give the sole the same, a little firmer: it can take more.
  5. Let the shoes dry at room temperature, never on a heater or in direct sun.

Light marks on white leather come off with a leather cleaner. Skip household cleaners and the washing machine; they are made for other things, and leather doesn't forgive them. For the inside, an odour protector and at least two hours of air.

Caught in the rain? Stuff the shoes loosely with paper to hold their shape and let them dry naturally at room temperature. Heat dries leather out and cracks it, so keep them away from the heater, however tempting.

How often should you condition the leather?

Every four to six months, with a generous layer of leather care. It keeps the leather supple, keeps its natural sheen and prevents cracking. Let it dry fully before you wear the pair. Smooth leathers like nappa and full grain both like this; suede and nubuck have their own routine. Own both? Keep them apart: cream for smooth leather, a protector and a dry brush for suede and nubuck, never cream on nubuck.

Not perfection, just a little attention, now and then.

Are creases in leather sneakers a problem?

No. Every leather shoe creases where the foot bends; it is part of how it wears in. Shoe trees and a little leather cream keep those creases soft. Nappa flexes without sharp creasing; full grain softens and shapes to your foot as you wear it.

Leather is a natural material, and it changes with you. Its colour deepens gradually with sunlight and wear, much like skin in the sun. Full grain marks, settles and gains character; nappa stays smooth and soft. Before shipping, every pair is checked for colour consistency, so left and right always match. What about the laces, the sole and the inside?

Replace them before you replace the shoes. Laces wear out long before shoes do. Ours are the same nylon we lace our sneakers with, 120 cm for the LT 01, LT 02 and LT 03, and 135 cm for the LT 04. New laces are the cheapest way to make a pair look new again.

Day one, and the cheapest way back to day one: new laces.

Inside, every one of our shoes has a removable insole. After heavy wear, swap in fresh memory foam insoles: together with new laces, it resets the shoe. Then wear them again, everywhere. A white platform sneaker gets the same routine, with a little extra for the thicker sole. See what to look for in white leather sneakers, or the full routine in our care guide.
