Sneakers with a suit: which pair, and how to wear it

Yes, sneakers work with a suit, as long as the sneaker is as clean as the tailoring. Choose smooth leather, a low and quiet sole and no big logo, let the trousers end just on the shoe, and keep the colours calm.

The jacket is on. The tie stayed in the drawer. Somewhere between the station and the first meeting you notice that nobody looks at your feet, except to see that they look right. And they feel like nothing at all. That is what a good sneaker under a suit does.

It is no longer a statement. It is simply how many men wear a suit now: for a working day, a wedding in the city, a dinner that runs late. But it only works when the sneaker is chosen with the same care as the suit. Here is how.

Can you wear sneakers with a suit?

Yes, as long as the sneaker is as clean as the suit: smooth leather sneakers with a low and quiet sole and no big logo. A sneaker that looks like it belongs on a sports field pulls the suit down. A sneaker that looks made for it lifts the whole outfit.

The reason it works is simple. A suit is about line and proportion, and a clean leather sneaker keeps both. Low, smooth and tonal, it continues the trouser instead of interrupting it. And at the end of a long day you are still standing on a sole with enough give to walk on all day, with a memory foam insole that has softened to your foot.

A sneaker that looks made for the suit lifts the whole outfit.

Which sneakers work best with a suit?

The quietest ones you can find, and white leather sneakers for men are the classic place to start. The LT 01 Court Lite Premium Nappa White is our quietest: fewer panels, less stitching, nothing on the upper that is not holding the shoe together. Smooth nappa from an LWG Gold tannery in Portugal, with a memory foam insole and an onSteam® lining inside.

The LT 01 Essence White is where it all began: the first shoe we made, in full-grain leather that gains character as you wear it. And with a softer, unstructured suit, the LT 03 brings a little more presence, with structured panels and our City sole.

Your suit The sneaker Why it works
Navy or charcoal LT 01 Court Lite, white nappa Crisp contrast, nothing loud
Black LT 03 Premium Nappa, Jet Black Tone on tone, one long line
Brown or earth tones LT 01 Essence White Full-grain leather that warms up with wear
Light grey LT 01 Court Lite, white nappa Light and fresh
Soft and unstructured LT 03 Premium Nappa White A shape that holds its own

With a black or charcoal suit, black leather sneakers keep one long, dark line from waist to floor.

How should the trousers fall on a sneaker?

Just on the shoe, with little or no fold. A sneaker is lower than a dress shoe, so a long trouser bunches up and hides it. A clean hem that touches the shoe keeps the leg long and lets the sneaker be part of the look.

The cut helps. The TP 03 Essence is slightly slim with a mid rise, built around a flat front that keeps everything quiet: a concealed zip, a button, four integrated pockets. A Portuguese stretch weave that feels crisp and drapes well.

Which suit works best with sneakers?

A soft one. A stiff, structured suit and a sneaker can fight each other; a suit with the line of tailoring and the give of something softer meets the sneaker halfway.

That is the idea behind the Essence Suit: the JC 01 overshirt and the TP 02 trouser in the same cloth, made to be worn all day and packed the same night. The TP 02 is cut from our Performance Stretch Weave at 225 g/m². It stretches, creases less and still looks sharp at the end of the day. Machine wash at 30°C, inside out. Wear it together, or split it into the rest of your wardrobe. Underneath, a white heavyweight T-shirt instead of a shirt keeps it easy.

Colour is the other half. Navy, charcoal and black meet white leather with clear contrast; brown and grey feel softer next to it. When in doubt, match the shoe to the lightest or the darkest thing you wear, and keep everything else in between.

What about socks?

Match the trouser, or go no-show. Dark socks in the colour of the trouser keep the line unbroken from waist to shoe. A bare ankle with no-show socks feels lighter and more relaxed. Either way, wear socks: less friction, and the lining of your shoes lasts longer.

How do you keep the whole look sharp?

Start with clean shoes. White leather under a dark suit shows everything, so give it a few minutes before you go: a damp brush with sneaker cleaner, small circles, a microfibre cloth to finish. When a new pair arrives, a light coat of leather care first; after that, every four to six months. It is all in our care guide.

Then let the details do their quiet work. No big logo, just a small square at the heel, for those who look closer. Laces flat, colours calm, trousers ending where they should. Nobody will notice your sneakers. They will notice that you look right.
